There are plenty of different variations on how youcan structure your 6 outfield players. In this series ofarticles we will explore different formations that we haveused and seen and outline the respective roles that need tobe fulfilled in these set ups.These are not sure fire winning formations! You should knowwhat strengths you have in your team and hopefully, theseexamples will give you some food for thought on how you maybest structure you team.
Starting formation two players indefense, three midfielders and one attacker. OrganisationThe defense starts with two players in a line who cover theleft and right sides of the field.The midfield players can be organised in a line or with thecentral midfield player playing ahead of the two wingers(more attacking) or slightly behind (more defensive).
Thelone attacker should take up a position deep into theopponents half.Rules may change from state to state but the offisde ruledoes not apply in mini soccer here in the UK, therefore thelone attacker can take this position without any worries.DefenseLeft and Right Backs, mark the opponent's forward(s) andare the only real defenders. They have to be dependable andwill only play a supporting role in offensive play if youroppenents retreat all players.The left, centre and right midfielders should also beavailable to assist in defending dependant on where theattack originates, they should try to stop or slow downopposing plays before they get to the defensive line.With only one attacker they can chase the ball and harrytheir opponents, possibly forcing errors in passing.This then allows the midfielders to take charge.
AttackLeft, Centre and Right Midfielders main considerationshould be to distribute the ball among themselves and tothe striker. Possession is key and steady, patient build upplay is required.Good passing techniques and movement off the ball, creatinggood passing triangles should also be encouraged.
Thesingle forward will have to cope with a game with fewchances to score.The striker will also have to fight for every ball in theattack and do a tremendous amount of running. Goodshielding and holding up the ball should be a key skill toenable supporting midfield players to catch up with play.During mini soccer, rolling substitues can be used and theattacker should be rotated frequently to prevent fatigue.Remember all young players like being striker so this is anideal opportunity to enable this.Also, the attack should originate from occasional crossesand long balls down the flanks.In this instance the right & left midfielders should usethe wings with the centre midfielder holding their positionto be used as an outlet and keep possession or if requiredbe on defensive duty.
