As old as the historyof man on this planet -- 6,000 years. So, in a sense there is nothing happening now that hasnot happened before. Long before the Twin Towerscollapsed, long before the war on terrorists, and longbefore the Israelis and the Palestinians began to sendeach other to untimely graves, the history of manright from Bible times has been a tale of misery andwoes.Consider our first parents, Adam and Eve.
Theirsuffering knew no bounds. Adam was to till and ploughthe ground before he could eat.
(0nly God knows how hemade his farm implements). And Eve was to sufferterrible pains during child birth.
That was notenough. They would have to die!Murder also was present in the beginning.
Cain killedhis brother Abel. His offence? God accepted hissacrifice.
David, the King murdered Uriah and took hisonly beautiful wife, Bathsheba. And this, despite allthe many wives of David! Add to this the killing ofChristian martyrs like Stephen, and Gods prophets tomake the homicide scenes complete. Also violence is not new.
Nimrod the great hunter wasa violent man who opposed God. He even initiated theconstruction of a mighty tower in Babel.
And then camethe Nephilims. These were violent giant offspringsresulting from the marriage between angels from heavenand beautiful women on earth.
In fact wickedness wasso rife in those days that God regretted making man inthe first place. What of rape? When you hear about a serial rapist, that one may be borrowing a leaf from Lots daughters. These beautiful girls had their father, Lot, drunkwith wine, raped him and had children for him (whata shame!) And beautiful easy-going Dinah, too, wasraped by Schechem. And her brothers went on a killingspree!Even oppression and injustice are not new.
TheEgyptians made the Israelites slaves in the land ofEgypt. They were makers of bricks and builders ofcities.
And in order to suppress the Israelipopulation, their male children were killed at childbirth! Naboth, a property owner in Israel alsoexperienced oppression and injustice when King Ahaband his wicked wife, Jezebel had him killed, andseized his vineyard. What about hatred? Is it a new phenomenon? No. Twofleshly brothers, Esau and Jacob hated each other todeath.
And do you know the origin of the hatred? Jacobbuying Esaus first born birthright with a pot ofporridge. Ridiculous? Maybe.
Further down in this list, Josephs brothers hatedhim, sold him into slavery, and was taken to Egyptbecause of jealousy. King Saul hated David to deathbecause he got more praises for war victories.
AndHaman plotted the extermination of the Jewish race inPersia during the reign of Ahaseurus. Why? BecauseMordecai, the Jew refused to bow down to him.Even war as one historian said, has been a constantin history .
God himself destroyed Sodom andGomorrha. The Israelites fought many wars against theinhabitants of Canaan and occupied their lands underGods direction.
Even God allowed the nation of Israelto be later destroyed by Babylon, and Babylon itselfwas later destroyed by the Persians.Again, when the church Holy Fathers abuse children, newsmen go to town. But do you know that the sons ofhigh priest Eli -- Holpni and Phinehas, who also wereofficiating priests, were having sexual intercoursewith women right before the temple? The Israeli menabused, maltreated and divorced their wives on flimsyexcuses in Bible times.
Even some burnt their childrenin sacrifice to idols, while others killed and atetheirs! What is more? Of course the list is endless: Delilahbetrayed Samson, her husband to the Philistines; Achanstole dedicated spoils of war in Jericho; the sons ofKorah rebelled against the leadership of Moses; theGibeonites tricked the Israelites, and Ananias thethief and Peter the Apostle, lied. Now God has permitted and is still allowing these badthings to happen in our time. Why does he permit it?But before we answer that question, let us first findout if God exists.
